Hardy: Sorry sir. All naval vessels have been designated smoke-free working environments.

Nelson: In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the main brace to steel the men before battle.

Hardy: The rum ration has been abolished. Admiral. Its part of the Government's policy on binge drinking.

Nelson: Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we'd better get on with it. Full speed ahead.

Hardy: I think you will find that there is a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water.

Nelson: Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crows nest, please.

Hardy: That won't be possible, sir.

Nelson: What?

Hardy: Health and safety have closed the crows nest, sir. No handrail, and they said the rope ladder doesn't meet regulations. They won't let anyone up there until proper scaffolding can be erected.

Nelson: Then get me the ships carpenter without delay, Hardy.

Hardy: He's busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the fo'c'sle Admiral.

Nelson: Wheelchair access? I never heard of anything so absurd.

Hardy: Health and safety again sir. We have to provide a barrier free environment for the differently abled.

Nelson: Differently abled? I've only one arm and one eye and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise to the rank of Admiral by playing the disability card.

Hardy: Actually you did sir. The Royal Navy is under-represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency.

Nelson: Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons.

Hardy: A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and safety won't let the crew up the rigging without crash helmets. And they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt - haven't you seen the adverts?

Nelson: I've never heard of such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy.

Hardy: The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral.

Nelson: What? This is mutiny.

Hardy: It's not that sir. It's just that they're afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone there's a couple of legal aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks.

Nelson: Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?

Hardy: Actually sir, we're not.

Nelson: We're not?

Hardy: No sir. The Frenchies and the Spanish are our European partners now. According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation.

Nelson: But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil?

Hardy: I wouldn't let the ships diversity coordinator hear you saying that sir. You'll be up on disciplinary.

Nelson: You must consider every man and enemy who speaks ill of your King.

Hardy: Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it's the rules.

Nelson: Don't tell me - health and safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?

Hardy: As I explained sir. Rum is off the menu! And there's a ban on corporal punishment.

Nelson: What about Sodomy?

Hardy: I believe its still allowed, sir.

Nelson: In that case - "kiss me Hardy"!

Sajha siezed up yesterday just as I was about to press the 'submit' button - some invisible gremlin residing perhaps, evading San's sight!

Thank you for your post. I know, the 'girth-progression' is less of a worry to yours truly at the mo purely because there's usually a lull in the activities at work at this time of the year and this then affords one with a fair bit of spare time to go and do other things ie physical/sporting stuff. Yeah Golfing too but the dreary, drizzly Angreji mausam is hardly any helpful if you want to go out and play the game. So my progress on the holes has been pretty dismal, and much less obviously on the belly-girth! The 'old man's game' is no good, mind you! So, the treadmill will have to make do for now!

Thanks for the interesting info on the Emerald City, and yes, it's surely one of the most beautiful cities that I've been to - the lakes, parks, the slick thoroughfares and shopping centres. And the Space Needle, the city's very own Eiffel Tower! I remember myself spending hours at the observatory - the scenery was just awesome. And the weather held superbly - it was April or May time, spring still. I remember someone mentioning whilst there, about the revolving deck just below the observatory, which was turned into a trendy restaurant or something? Would have been lovely to pop in for a cuppa or two. Countless cuppas though in the city's famous landmark: STARBUCKS! Had such a great time, my only regret was the shortness of time. I also regretted not being able to visit the art gallery - missed a brilliant opportunity to have a look at works by Pollock, Warhol, Monet, Rodin et al. Oh well. Some other time maybe! Hey, I might as well re-watch 'Sleepless in Seattle' tonight. Howaboutthat?? :)

Didn't know you had relocated to the Emerald City but hope that the relocation has been seamless. Hectic time for you too, no? Good luck with your studies. I hope Sajha has not been too distracting! Take care.

You needn't remind me of the dreary "angregi mausaum"..you see, the weather here in the Pacific NorthWest is the same...dreary, rainy..and generally rather miserable this time of year!..we just came out of 27 straight days of rain, had a one day break (Sunday: God's day of rest and I guess the rain's too !!:-)) and now it's been another four days of consecutive rainfall...so yes, nothing but forced chirpy attitudes here!

The museum in Seattle...there are several that are really nice..The Seattle Art Museum doesn't really have a lot of the master's of contemporary work but the Frye has some brilliant works by Rothko and Kandinsky but, I dare say, nothing to match the brilliance of Tate Modern and Satchi's gallery (it's astounding to me that one man can own the work of so many master's!!)

Golf, I too thought of it as an Old Man's game until a friend who "found religion" and turned pro a while back convinced me otherwise...but, I can't swing that iron for tuppence and the farthest the ball "flies" at my attempts is a few inches from my toe!! :-)

Always such a delight to read your posts - thanks again. So, you're also having to put up with the dreary, drippy, miserable Pacific NorthWest mausam eh! Another rainy Friday again, no? Blimey. But hope that the 'chirpy attitudes' remain in situ, forced or otherwise! More cheery, chirpier this end perhaps. Friday, you see. This plus I'm heading off to London tomorrow for a quiet weekend trip. Might try theatre, as it's been a while since I last went to a West End play. Quite a few of the big names to choose from (Ibsen, Luigi Pirandello, Hare et al). Might try Pirandello but we'll see. Failing that, Tennessee Williams won't be going amiss. His 'The Night of the Iguana', produced to a critical acclaim, is currently being staged at Lyric. The cast is impressive with Woody Harrelson (of the 'Indecent Proposal' fame) in the lead role. Any plans for the weekend?

Thanks for the info on Fyre. There obviously seems to be no dearth in the range of choices available to one, in terms of cultural tastes. Excellent. Yes, Tate Modern is massive. Don't know about Sachhi as I have never been there. It's indeed amazing to think that one man should own such a vast collection of art works - Charles Sachhi btw lost some of the famous contemporary pieces from his collection in a fire in 2004, including a few by Tracey Emin. But my personal best must be, head and shoulders, The Tate Britain at Millbank. Their collection is just massive - Rennaisance/Enlightenment and contemporary, you name it. It boasts the largest collection of works by British artistes - Turner, Blake, Moore, The Pre-Raphaelites et al - outstanding. Their collection includes one of my favourite Pre-Raphaelite paintings: Millais's 'Ophelia'. The tragic Ophelia from Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. Really timeless. Another Millais I love is 'Mariana' - yes, again a Shakespearean character from 'Measure for Measure' and also a subject of a much-loved Tennyson poem. Lovely. Oh they also have Rothko and Kandinsky. Also Munch, Whistler and the Impressionists - they have got one from Monet's water lily series! But I love the Picasso collection - massive.

I hope the weekend in the city was a fun one--there's much to do by way of vices! :-))
Ah the theatre in London..nothing like it. I mean, cities like Seattle and New York have their fair share of theatre but, New York for the most part is Broadway and as wonderful as Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon et all are, I find that too much of Musical is not really to my liking so I tend to look for the smaller productions.

If you did manage to make it to Tennessee Williams, you must tell me how that fared--I've been waiting with bated breath to see it here in Seattle but it's been a long wait, moreover, the plays in "smaller cities" like Seattle never attract the big name stars but, I intend to see it even if it is a production with lesser known thespians.

Rain...ah..the one constant factor in my life so far--going on an entire week of consecutive rain and apparently, there isn't any respite expected soon..so grin and bear it seems to be the order of the day!

I must admit to being rather late for my Sajha-call but Monday was a horrendous start to what promises to be an extremely busy week all along. And the weekend? Don't even ask me how it was like. It was a total shambles to say the least. Something popped up out of the blue - work related mind you - and I had to postpone my trip to London.. grrr.. So two more Saturdays for me to wait before I can bluff you about my brush with the 'vices' that London has to offer! The seven deadly sins rather (stop press: I have never got round to reading Dante in full, so don't ask me what these are, hai! :-)). I'm a little disappointed with my having to curtail the weekend plan so abruptly but hey, there's always next time. And this next one won't hopefully let me down - it had better not. So fingers crossed.

Yes, New York must feel pretty tasteless without its Broadway shows in much the same way it would feel to imagine London without West End. Musicals - they fail to tickle my fancy either. I once went to what I thought was a play, a Tennessee Williams play - A Street Car Named Desire. Little did I know, the show was actually a musical-adaptation of the play. How very disappointing - so, I left the place after only a few minutes into the show. A complete waste of time and money. That was in Edinburgh a few years back during the festival.

Soho/Covent Garden eh! The theatres along the Shaftesbury Avenue are among my fav ones. And the Waterstones bookstore on Piccadilly street. Marvellous. Another of my fav London venues is the Royal Festival Hall next to Waterloo Bridge on the other side of the Thames. I have been to some really memorable classical concerts there - the London Philharmonic Orchestra do their regular shows there with famous conductors. You've been to this part of Belaayat, ho?

Yeti nai ahile lai. Doubtless, there will be loads to talk about the place. I wouldn't quite know about the 'hangover' though - still a, ahem, teetotal, you see! Confused? I know, you are but keeping sober is what I do best, madam! :-) And that's minus one vice! :)

A botched weekend indeed. I know, I didn't miss much, considering the drippy mausam. Oh the whale - how very sad. Extraordinary spectacle in the Thames as the rescue attempt got under way. People crowded around the bank in sheer numbers, and like I, millions more watched the unfolding scene with interest as the news was beamed live on tele. They couldn't save the animal despite their best effort. Really moving.

Wits of steel? Thank you madam but there're times when the 'steel' is not quite so steely hai - it does tend to start melting! Yours truly is also a mere mortal, you see! So, forget the 'halos and wings', and besides, Saint Sandhurst must seem like a weird name, don't you think? :)

Sorry to hear that it wasn't a good weekend for you too but hope, the rain will gradually subside. Hey, I'm super-duper busy today. Will write again hai ta. Art appreciation notes to follow in due course. This plus Tennessee Williams. Poor old man turning in his grave eh. :) Oh, this funnily reminds me of the birthdays of two cultural icons. Today is Robert Burns's (The Scottish mahaa-kavi) birthday - there's a party that I have got to attend. A big day in our annual calendar. There's then Mozart - Salzburg's most famous son - who will turn 250 this Friday. His birthday is being observed across Europe with pomp and shows - the celebration started weeks in advance. I will be spending time watching BBC shows and listening to Radio 4.
