A little over a month I posted this thread: http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/OpenThread.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=32015

Back then, I thought this was some isolated incidents that would go away on its own. Unfortunately, instead of going away, it's becoming more of a common theme in the sajha kurakani.

An individual can be bad. An individual can do condemnable acts. But we cannot condemn the whole group because of the acts of one or few people of the same group. As we look at history of our country, groups of people have been discriminated against. Kamis, sarkis and many other such castes have been segregated to never be able to live up to their potentials. In this day and age everyone needs to have the opportunity to shine at what he/she is good at. I think it is conceited and wrong for anyone to think that a certain caste should not be able to do certain things.

Most of us who visit this site are educated, yet, we take advantage of the anonimity provided by the internet to thrash other groups. Other groups which consist of individuals. Individuals who do not fit the stereotypes.

As we look back at the history of Nepal. We have always been divided into separate castes. It has always been in the rulers best interest to divide and rule. Even the British used the 'divide and rule' policy to rule over India. We have just recently earned 'democracy' (which is still in it's conception stage), and it's a perfect time for us to do away with the caste system that divides us. We, are individuals firstly, and then we are Nepalis. It's a perfect time to move on to the 21st century and do away with a tradition that tries to determine your fate according to your birth. We should judge a person by his/her individual achievements rather than branding someone according to his/her birth family.

I'm a little tired after coming back from the ANA today so please accept my apologies if I have not been very coherent. The main thing I want to say is that caste discrimination is not going to go away on it's own. We cannot simply ignore it and say that it's part of life. We have to do something about it, and we can all start by NOT practicing this in sajha. Please join me in declaring sajha a site where we do not discriminate on the basis of castes. This will be enforced. As responsible members, I hope you will help by notifying admin@sajha.com if and when these kinds of topics rear their ugly heads.

More on the ANA and more photos coming soon...

San thanks for the reply. I agree with you. And if any such movement is run by sajha or any Nepali groups here in the USA targeting to eradicate ill practice of casticsm , I will try to involve in it.
Sadly, even we- so called educated of Nepali society could not come up with respect to each other let alone coming to any conclusion and you had to intervine. I wish we could perform healthy discussion , but my expirence - and i'm sure i'm not the only one , it is very rare in any Nepali group.
I think we should let go our ego, think we all are the same and start thinking as a Nepali and not as bahun, chhetry, newar, matwalis or others. Freigners take us as Nepalis, it is our primary identity. Castism is only what we have created withing ourself. The discrimination that comes with castism leads to heinous outcomes and should be stopped.
I am glad to see so many sajha users who hate castism. I am already excited for new Nepal, where we have love and respect for each other :)

Let's SPA govt. to come up with another proclomation which force Nepalese not to use Surnames anymore... simply use the First name, one and only one. Like Prachanda instead of Pushpa Kamal Dahal. and so on. Do you think this will force all Nepalese to think as a NEPALI and not as a Bahun, Chhetri, Newar, Gurung, Limbu, Matwalis? Man, you can't do such thing.

You have to accept the natural inherent attributes of various group. To certain instance or situation, each of these group will react differently.. That's a law of nature. Even certain disease attach prefentially to particular race, or a drug may be effective in certain race or group.

Probably, it's about protecting the business of sajha. When you write, you have to be politically correct no matter how you feel for real for protecting your image, or business and so on.

I think it's good to understand all types of people, their nature etc. Such information would sometimes protect us from swindling and so on by other people.

Of course, becasue we know that other person is bad, shrewd and what not, we cannot kill that person. All we can do is protect ourselves from them.

Therefore, sharing tips or info on other person is always good thing, however cannot always genralize it, should not use foul language etc.

Murkha dai, Surnames in our society is more than wht surnames are in western countries. Have you seen Millers fighting with smiths, or Jones in the west? i doubt it. However in a Nepali society surnames bring affiliation which is primary than the national affiliation. Which has not helped us over the years. What has caste system done any good to our society? nothing.

A nation shold be like a team of diverse people, working for common goals. While we have big problems like poverty, political conflicts, economic- just to name a few, we are hung up with our castes. It is like mastrubating when your house is burning.

It is not going to go over night. And hopeless SPA , babu, king - forget about them, i didn't even talk about them, nor do i hope anything from them. What am i hopeful from is the people like you and other sajhalites who have education, who are wise and humble. Who respect each others and give secondary importance to the caste they belong to while give primary importace to the nation they are from.
I am hopeful for changes by such wise people, not by SPA , maoists of king.

What a joke here?

When these people work in Nepali government Office in Nepal, they do all kinds of crimes, corruption, broke law/orders and destroyed Democracy, Civil rights and justice systems. These people pushed Nepal into Dark Age. These people stole national wealth and make ordinary Nepalese the poorest people in the world.

Now they flew another country... and they talk like how much they love their country Nepal. Why Nepalese were fighting? Why Nepal did not develop? They need Peace, Democracy and Human Rights in Nepal?

These crooks tell that we have to love each other and behave nice.

We need to do background check and family history need to check of these crooks.

San,
Whatever you're trying to do and have done is laudable. However, you can't stop these people and their way of thinking. They are showing their level of thinking, hoina ta?? It's their loss, not ours...

In my belief, caste discrimination in Nepal is nto going to go away overnight, rather fight against cast discrimination will have to fought over a long period of time. As Nepalese, caste and what it means is ingrained in our brains as we are growing up. How many times do kids growing up in either educated or uneducated famililies across nepal and abroad hear things like "falano le ta newar bihe garecha" or "falano le bahun bihe garecha"...."pariwar ko naak kaatecha" and stuff along that line.

Just like the civil rights in the US is still an on going battle, our society which is even older by centuries and caste based social practises have been openly accepted and practised for eben longer, it won't just go away. There is no silver bullet.

It will be hard fought long struggle that needs to be fought only if new generations of Nepalese are willing to fight and unfortunately I don't see that desire in the new generation either. As clearly evident in Sajha and in other daily activities, we talk just the way our fathers and forefathers talked. We have not changed all that much...so brace yourselves and spew your venom in Sajha rather than going out and killing your neighbours because they are from a different caste or sect just like they are doing in Iraq, former Yugoslavia, Ireland, India...I guess I will stop here.
