How many of you guys want to marry into intercast?? I know I do, I am so called Bahun but I find Newari girls very attractive, do you people know any nice- Beautiful and well educated Newari girl who want to get to know me better. Are there any girls who don’t give a damn about cast, and think wiser then these discriminating losers?

Before this post gets out of hand and becomes a 'looking for a date' post, let me give my two cents on your orginal title' intercaste marriage'. I think the caste shouldn't be the only determining factor in choosing your partner. This doesnt mean you will make an effort to find someone from a different caste, but you will have to keep an open eye and mind to a person....umm, their personality rather. I dont think their caste determines their personalities...I have met very nice and interesting people from both the genders who come from various castes. Another side of the story. I am getting married in two weeks to a guy from a different caste. Neither of us set out to find someone from the 'other' caste...we were not even looking for anyone..but we got to know each other and fell in love. From the day one, we both knew it was going to be tough to convince both our parents. We could have chosen to walk away from each other at that point, but we stuck together and although our parents are not the happiest at the moment, they have given us their blessings. They are still uncomfortable with the whole intercaste thing..and mostly I think because of those gossiping neighbors and relatives. I do understand the hardship they will face because of me and my fiance's decision..but at the end of the day...they really want us to be happy. And if the person you love is someone they are comfortable with...in another word, someone they would have picked for you themselves had he been from your caste, I don't think you should worry too much. I think people will slowly get over the social stigma of inter-caste marriage. The most important thing to remember is to be comfortable with your relationship first and have faith in your partner. Only then you can stand up for your self and have mature conversation with your parents. I think parents are more receptive to your opinion if you have thought out your future and come across as an adult...not some teenager in love. Just my two cents...would love to participate more on Sajha..but let me tell you the downside of intercaste marriage: you and your partner will have to plan the whole wedding, with no help from your family....think about if you are up for this or not before you venture out.

One intercaste marriage will eliminate the whole family tree of caste problem.I am a child of intercaste marriage and as per my parents, was not an easy path even in USA. A grand scandal in Nepal in 70-80s. I find it so funny this whole caste problem thing and love to take a potshot at it. And yes, Timetraveller, we celebrate Mha puja,Dasain,Tihar,Ihhi,Gufa, Gunyu cholo and also Christmas and Thanksgiving. We grew up learning Nepali,English ,Newari and Hindi and are proud to call ourselves South Asians.

Lakhee, My parents have given me the choice to find a guy for me only if he belongs to this whole cast, and standard thingy.. I know...I know it sounds weird....But they are right after all they have done so much to me..And the last thing I want to do is hurt them.. I will see how I go if not they will find someone for me..

Dimag kharab, Its not like that.. Maan milcha, kina namilnu ni.. Love has got nothing to do with any caste.. Its just for marriage, if you are close to your family and your family are a bit conservative and they care about people talking behind their back and you care about your family then its the point to consider.. It all depends on what type of person you are as well...If you are strong and though and have got courage to fight/convince your family then its ok too.. Just my thoughts anyway...

ok in this whole intercast talk is being held at the expense of bahun girls. just like the whole interracial relationship phenomenon is happening at the expense of black girls. and i think there is a similarities between these 2 types of girls (bahun & blacks) -- both very strong opinionated (and i mean it as a compliment) and would rarely go outside their own kind (race / caste). so, kudos to the bahun brothers for crossing the caste barrier and a reminder to the bahun sisters as you girls still have a lot of catching up to do (and no crossing the border barrier by having indian partner doesn't count as most of them are still brahmins) LOL

daddyz-here - reading your post reminds me of a friend i have!! She's against blacks marrying whites!! She herself is black!! Don't take this in a bad way, we're both not racists or anything!! The whole issue with her is because of slavery. I mean when she says it to me she's like three generations before me my great grandmother was a slave!! I mean you might think that's a lot of time but really it's not!! you tell your kids about it and your kids tell their kids about it!! Are we as humans in the society that we live in now ready to just look or skip over the fact that slavery even existed?? This is kind of off topic, but in a way if you look at the intercast marriage thing: are we ready to just throw away the differences of culture and our background and where we came from just down the drain and forget everything and unite?? Like are we ready to not look at the differences that make us different? This might sound weird but say an American marries a British. There will always be the fact that one is a British and the other an American!! Kind of in a way isn't this the same thing with intercaste marriage?? And since that fact will always be present, wouldn't be hard to just try and ignore it?? I mean aren't we just making life more difficult for ourselves?? and i am not saying making life difficult is bad kind of thing either! :) And also aren't these differences that make us one in different ways?? PS: I am not saying anything here, these are just questions to think about!! :)

One thing that doesn't seem to have come up so far, and if it has I have missed it, is class. I suppose it doesn't sound nice and might actually appear abit snobbish to some to say it but inter-caste or inter-cultural marriages can get complicated if they also happen to be inter-class. I suppose it is not any different from a same-caste but inter-class marriage with possibly one exception: if there are any problems or misundertandings, sometimes people may not be savvy enough to tell caste from class. When you don't diagnose the problem correctly, you may end up with the wrong remedies to cure it. Does that mean such marriages don't work. No. It just means an inter-caste couple need to develop the tools to handle cross cultural conflict and if they also have differences in economic backgrounds then they need to develop additonal tools to handle the additional difference. Personally, I am all for it. Caste, and class, are all in the mind.
