Today's Chatpat: October 6th, 2023

1.The Supreme Court has asked our government to provide a written justification for the Presidential pardon of a local criminal, Yog Raj Dhakal, aka Regal on the occasion of the Constitution Day recently. Regal is a local criminal operating in Nepalgunj and is affiliated with the youth organization of the Nepali Congress.

Regal had murdered his former partner, Chetan Manandhar, eight years ago during a dispute over extortion rackets. He was pardoned by the President for good behavior and after serving 50% of his sentence. Our government has been pardoning politically affiliated people in the past as well but Regal's entourage of twenty vehicles, welcoming him outside the prison seems to have created an uproar in the country.

Late Chetan Manadhar's wife is currently on a hunger strike to protest the Presidential pardon. Even though the constitution says that murderers cannot be pardoned by the President, the government has been ignoring such provisions to free their cadres who are serving prison time for murder. Resham Chaudhary was also pardoned a while ago. Chaudhary was convicted for the murder of police personnel and children during the 2015 Tikapur riots.

2. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is coming to Nepal on October 14. He will be here for a four-day vacation. We think that he should be visiting Russia and Ukraine instead of coming here for a pre-Dashain vacation like our PM did few weeks ago visiting New York and China.

Guterres was last here in 2007 as the UN high commissioner for refugees to discuss third-country resettlement for Bhutanese refugees. Fast forward, 2023, our former Home Minister and many high-ranking government officials are in jail awaiting trial for the Fake Bhutanese Refugee scam. The UN had coordinated the resettlement of 113,500 refugees to western countries from 2006 to 2016.

But our politicians and government officials had cooked up a scam after 2018, where they collected millions of Rupees from Nepalese to register them as Bhutanese refugees to send them abroad even though it was impossible because the resettlement program had already ended in 2016.

3. It seems that our public servants would rather take to the streets to put forth their demands to the government than ask their trade unions to hash out a deal quietly. Earlier, the capital faced the teachers' protest where public school teachers protested new provisions in the Education bill. The government signed an agreement and it was called off.

Now, we have government workers form all of the 753 local units across the country, protesting against the government. They have decided to stop all work except for essential ones at the local wards and municipalities across the country. As usual, the protest leaders have called all public servants from the local units to come to Kathmandu and show their strength to their own government.

4. Kathmandu Valley is witnessing a surge in dengue cases as Dashain nears. According to media reports, 80 new daily cases are being recorded. This year alone, more than 35,000 people have been affected, resulting in the death of over two dozen people. Medical experts blame our health authorities for not taking the matter seriously.

Although there is no cure for Dengue, doctors advise patients with symptoms of dengue to seek immediate treatment at health institutions. Last year, 88 people died and more than 50,000 were affected as dengue spread in all 77 districts in the country.

5. Nepal will finally get a medal at the Asian Games. Our Kabbadi Women's team has managed to enter the semifinals and are guaranteed a bronze medal regardless of the outcome. Let us all congratulate them for making us proud while we hope that our sports officials will do more for our athletes than misusing the funds for their own vacations.
