Folks,

I am going to graduate this coming May. Now I need to apply for OPT. I talked with the advisor and she said I have to fill the form of I-765. Its all good, I am going to. But If I am not wrong, it used to be a different form right. Does it has changed? And another question, on this form, in question 17. it asks for employer's name and some about e-verify. I haven't got my job yet, how can i write this? I am a business major student., I have no idea which category should i choose. what the heck is (c)(3)(C).??? I should put in and when will be perfect date to start my opt. My advisor is kinda don't know anything. She gave me infomation of filing I-765, after searching a long time on her big file. Please share something, who have went through this or are going.

Will be very grateful and thanks in advance also.

That part is for 17 Month STEM Extension only. If this is your first OPT, then donot worry about the employer and E-Verification number.
If you dont have a job, then u will have 2 months of grace period from the time of graduation. Try to utilize it.

You have to inform your advisor within 60 days of OPT start date. After the completion of OPT, u can get ur OPT extended for another 17 Months only if u r in STEM category.

you have to apply opt before you graduate. you get 60 days of grace period , but that is if you are to leave the country or change your status to something else, like going to masters programs and get an i20  for that or change of status to h1  you can dealy your opt for that grace period by applying late but what if your ead don't come on time, then you're screwed/. yes i765 is the form for work permit, and you have to select the right code. you have to bring that form back to your ipo to get it checked and she usually put note on yuor i20 stating applied for opt on the back of it. once you get an opt do not forget to report your job to your ipo advisor, or else sevis won't get updated and you'll be in trouble there is a 90 days rule for that. since you are a business student, you won't get a stem extension, so forget about everify and extension related to STEM degrees. start looking for jobs and apply for opt, i think it takes about 3 months for work permit to get approved now a days , double check at uscis.gov . just my suggestions so please do your rearch and you're already on the right track btw.

good cluk

l

like to add something,

the last day of OPT start will be July 2nd week, if you file now you and get your OPT card quickly. If you file only in April, there will be buch of students doing same so it may get delayed.
About the grace period, you have to fill only employer's name in the form within 90 days, and u don't need to fill the position, or any other thing so its not a big deal, you and count any job for that.
The thing you are talking about I-765 is only for 17 months extention and it needs to be filled 3 weeks before your 12 months OPT ends.

So If I get a job that starts from june and ends july (the job is only 1 month long).. is it wise to start my opt on June or should I just forget about this 1 month long job and utilize the 2 months grace period and start my OPT only in July?

If I am not mistaken, you should be wrting C 3 B on no. 17 because that implies post completion OPT. C3C's Stem OPT extension as far as I remember. A single mistake can delay your opt for ever..so just make sure.
