Dear Keshab Raj Seadie, Esq.

I looked up the origin of the title/suffix "Esquire" which you use to sign off in your emails. For those who are curious, please find below a brief encyclopedia excerpt on the meaning of "Esq."
It is evident that the title was originally meant to indicate that the person on whom it was used was at least a gentleman, and usually more than a gentleman. I trust that you are both, as well as a competent attorney.

However, I must point out that less than esquire like attributes are revealed when imagery such as the following is used to speak about someone who, even if one disagrees with him, was the elected Prime Minister of a sovereign country. After all, Deuba has certainly given many more years of his life to Nepal than you or I ever did or probably will.

("no matter how hard we try to clean the toilet, it will again get dirty: reforming Deuba is a similar futile task. ")

The above line is from your email condemning Deuba, which, btw, is your right and freedom to do. But I was taken aback by your choice of words and imagery to convey your point. In all my years of following the charged politics of South Asia and Nepal I cannot ever recall a politician comparing an opponent, no matter how hated, to an excretement bowl!! Certainly you do the 'esq' tradition a disservice when you invoke such vitrolic and base imagery to convey the essentially straightforward charge that in your view Deuba is an untrustworthy politician. English is a rich and resourceful language, which, as a practicing "ESQ" you no doubt benefit from every day. In light of your 'esq' status, I would urge you to use greater finess and taste to make known your political tastes and distates.

Thank you,

Dear Dipak Ji:

Suffice it to say that having a person like Disgraced PM Deuba at Columbia University is a joke in itself. He is not eligible for a U.S. visa by all means. It seems like the U.S. embassy did make a mistake on this one. Deuba should be taken as an Enemy of Democracy and a cheap tool of King G. Being in New York City, most of the time I do recognize bull.... and no matter how hard we try to clean the toilet, it will again get dirty: reforming Deuba is a similar futile task. We should leave this guy behind and look for a People's Nepal through new generation of leadership. Mr. Deuba has caused enough pain to Nepal and it would be better for him to stay out of the democratic movement.

Next time around I will work very hard to revoke his U.S. visa. I do not want to see an Enemy of Freedom in the land of lady liberty.

"no matter how hard we try to clean the toilet, it will again get dirty: reforming Deuba is a similar futile task. " A very approximate assesment of Arjoo's husband. Deuba is worse than a toilet bowl, but we should let that pass. However, there is nothing strange about his visit to US. This guy is a tool of the US.

Thanks for posting this email in a PUBLIC forum such as this.
Transparency is the BEST disinfectant against ideas that are silly.

That said, Mr KS's politics is not of any concern to me.
He could love Deuba or hate Deuba, and either sentiment is fine.

What I find very interesting is:

1) his calling himself "Esq" (presumably to indicate his 'lawyerly' status, and that's fine!)

2) and his publicly declaring that "[Deuba] is not eligible for a U.S. visa by all means." AFTER, let it be noted, Deuba has already arrived in the US, presumably on a valid US visa. [One can only assume that KS is a high-ranking US Dept. of State official with a blanket authority to overrule Kathmandu's US visa consular's decision. And yes, as the Microsoft Antitrust case has taught us, private emails can be considered PUBLIC documents.]

It's one thing if a Nepali restauranter in Boston with zero knowledge about the US visa rules rants against Deuba in such a manner. It's a bit of an eye-brow raising event
when someone sporting Esq designation sends out such emails.

On a larger note, I, for one, have learnt to shake my head with sadness when Nepali 'professionals' let their narrow political partisanship erode their professional credibility.

Seadie-ji's prophesy proved true.

Deuba wants the king to remain Supreme commander-in-chief !

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, May 15 - The proclamation of the "momentous political proposal" earlier said to be done by the reinstated House of Representatives (HoR) on Monday has been deferred.

A meeting of the top leaders of the Seven-party Alliance (SPA) that took place at the Prime Minister's residence at Baluwatar decided to postpone the HoR proclamation until the expansion of the council of ministers.

Today's meeting also decided to expand the cabinet within the next couple of days. The House proclamation will first be approved by the full cabinet before it is presented at the HoR, the meeting decided.

In today's meeting the SPA leaders agreed to give full shape to the cabinet by Wednesday.

The announcement of the House proclamation was deferred as the SPA leaders were divided over some of its key points including the possession of the Supreme-Commander-in-Chief post of the Royal Nepalese Army, sources said.

Serious differences erupted among the SPA leaders after Nepali Congress-Democratic (NC-D) President Sher Bahadur Deuba told the meeting that the king should be the Supreme-Commander-in-Chief of the army even if he is not allowed to put on army uniform.

The sources also said that the expansion of the cabinet, too, got delayed after Deuba failed to name the ministerial candidates from his party.

"Deuba said that he would hold a central committee meeting of his party tomorrow and finalize the name list of the ministers," said Amik Serchan.

Talking to journalists after the meeting, UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal said that the cabinet could not be expanded due to NC-D's delay to submit the names of ministers.

According to Lilamani Pokhrel of Jana Morcha Nepal, Deuba put forth "controversial" issues regarding the control of the Army.

Deuba, however, refused to comment on this.

Sources said the cabinet, after its expansion "within a couple of days", would table the proclamation at the HoR.

Earlier it was expected that the HoR would endorse a momentous proposal to strip the king of all powers including that of deciding the heir to the throne, thereby proclaiming the House 'sovereign' Monday afternoon.

According to a copy of the draft 10-point proposal, the Rajparishad will be scrapped; all organs of the state - including royal institutions shall remain under HoR, which shall have the right to enact, amend and annul laws on deciding the heir to the throne. The HoR shall decide the royal expenditures and other facilities; king's income and private property, just like any other ordinary citizen's, shall be taxed; questions on any illegal action of the king can be raised in a court; "His Majesty's Government" will be changed to "Nepal Government".

Likewise, the post "Supreme Commander-in-chief" of the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) held to date by the king shall be scrapped; "RNA" shall be renamed "Nepali Army"; the Chief of the Army Staff shall be appointed by the State Affairs Committee of HoR on the recommendation of the Prime Minister; and the Royal Household Service (that looks after palace employees and officials) shall be taken over by civil servants.
