In a spectacular show of Khukuri (or Kukri as they prefer to spell in English), the traditional weapon of Nepalis (Gorkhali), thousands of people organized a rally in Kathmandu to stress on their demand of proportional electoral system for the upcoming elections to the constituent assembly. Thank God, Khukuris were not sakkali, they were all nakkali, made from paper. But words written in a sticker pasted in a big Khukuri clearly said: “We hope we don’t have to raise sakkali weapons to make our demands fulfilled.” The people participating in the rally were either associated with the Federation of Nepali Indigenous Nationalities (FNIN) or supporters of their demands. काठमाण्डौ, माघ २९ गते/ अन्तरिम संविधानका ४२ वटा धारा र उपधारा संशोधन गर्नुपर्ने मागसहित आदिवासी/जनजातिहरुले यहाँ खुकुरी जुलुस निकालेका छन् ।

नक्कली खुकुरीसहितको यो विरोध र्याली प्रतीकात्मक तथा सांकेतिक मात्र भएको तर आदिवासी/जनजातिका मागहरुलाई बेवास्ता गरेमा यसलाई वास्तविकतातर्फ लैजाने वक्ताहरु महासंघका अध्यक्ष पासाङ शेर्पा, महासंघका सल्लाहकार तथा आदिवासी/जनजातिको तर्फबाट गठित वार्ता समितिका संयोजक डा. ओम गुरुङ र नेकपा -एमाले) का पृथ्वीसुब्बा गुरुङले व्यक्त गरेका थिए ।

आदिवासी/जनजातिसम्बद्ध विभिन्न संघसंस्थाहरुको उल्लेख्य उपस्थिति रहेको खुकुरी जुलुस रत्नपार्कदेखि सुरु भएर बागबजार, पुतलीसडक, प्रदर्शनीमार्ग, भद्रकालीहुँदै शहिदगेटमा पुगेर विरोध सभामा परिणत भएको थियो ।

Janajati Federation stages rally in the capital
Demanding federal structure of the state and ethnicity-based proportional representation in the forthcoming constituent assembly elections, the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalists (NEFIN) staged a 'khukuri rally' in the capital Monday afternoon.



Carrying banners, placards and replica khukuris, members of various indigenous communities affiliated with the Federation began their rally from Ratnapark and converged into a gathering at Shahid Gate.

They also chanted slogans demanding federal system, proportional representation in the CA polls and linguistic freedom.

The NEFIN, an umbrella body of over 50 organisations of indigenous communities in Nepal, has warned of nationwide protests if the demands of indigenous people are not addressed at the earliest.

The Federation on Sunday formed a five-member committee led by Dr Om Gurung to hold talks with the government over the demands of indigenous communities.

Earlier, the government's talk team had sent a letter to the NEFIN and other agitating groups including the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum and the two factions of Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) for talks to politically address their grievances. nepalnews.com mk Feb 11 07
