Hey guys! Are you ANA member? If you are then you have the right to know
about the upcoming leadership right? DO you know who will be in the ANA
leadership? You might have heard of Mr. Nabin Dutta, I think he is OK for
the president. But the ridicules name is for General Secretary’s candidate
Mr. Medini Adhikari. Have you heard of him? Never! I heard that Mr.
Adhikari never serve the Nepali community, rather when he was living in
Atlanta he opened an orphanage and collect thousands of dollars and fled
to Minnesota (Mr. Soubhagya Shrestha may know about it). I'm afraid that,
if this kind of leadership comes on board, then by next convention
everyone will quit the ANA

Good !!

Disolve that LAME ASS ORGANIZATION. All it does is trow a 4th July drunken party.

The only ones that are going to miss them is going to be the DRUNKS WHO GOTO THAT PARTY AND THE HORN DOGS IN HEAT WHO GO THER LOOKING TO MATE.

Its not like it tries to assimilate itself into nepali community of USA(all the fugging red tape and bureaucracy has made it a LAME DUCK). So I AM NOT GOING TO MISS THEM.

I think the ANA and other Nepali and ethnic organizations will exist as long as there is an influx of Nepalese into the US. These organizations exist to fulfill a demand - namely that of people needing to reconnect with their roots in a foreign land.

As for assimilation, organizations like the ANA and others are by nature (and perhaps also by a conscious choice) geared more towards multi-culturalism than assimilation.

Just a thought.

Bathroom is just a hater. You talk about drunks... I dont see what the big deal is. Most Nepalis work their ass off and for a weekend they let loose. How can you blame them? I guess Bathroom is that party pooper in the corner that has no friends and just sits there watching everyone else have a good time.

I think it is a great idea to gather all the Nepalis around the US and have a good time. My only complain would be the lack of charity involved. Plus, the sports is always great.

I think there is a point there to be made about assimilation. It is an issue on the minds of many immigrants: how far can you or do you assimilate? It is a situation we find ourselves in throughout life - and not just on immigration matters : when do you try to fit in and when do you try to stand out?

But as far as assimilation and ANA or GBNC or any of the ethnic organizations go, it boils down to knowing where to go for what: you don't go to a Chinese restaurant to eat Indian food I suppose no more than you would to a Nepalese organization to assimilate into American society

Just a thought.

I'll stop there before this becomes a discussion about assimilation.

:)

If I am on the same page w/ you USNepali , Mr. Medini Adhikari did his masters from mnsu.edu in ECON. I saw his name on the library catalog. Had no clue that he was a fraud. He used to have a genuine graduate assistantship position in Mankato.

Bathroom, you got some funny comments... I ll give you that... Let me rephrase... there are always going to be a few drunks that go a little too far, hell almost every Nepali party I go to gets crashed by the cops because of drinking and drinking related violence... so ANA is no different.... that has nothing to do with the ANA... whether its ANA or some party in New York, there will always be something that goes wrong.. But, what is really wrong with the majority getting together and having some fun?

BUt I have not seen ANA take part in any immigrant's who are trying to asimilate to fit in or stand out. I went to one ANA and it was a long long loooooong time ago. And from what i have seen and heard ....it has not changed one bit.

Its a place where the have try to showcase their wealth. and the Have not try 'n droool over it. And then we got so called intellectual PUNDITS who come there to showcase their Phd and post Doc by INDULGING IN ASSTALK SEMINARS( with no results).

I don't think ANA has done jack to assimilate Nepali folks. Sajha.com probably has provided more service to the community than ANA has ever done. I have received more help from sajha community than ANA could ever dream of. I don't have to pay, I don't have to wait, I don't need anyone's permission. I can front any question here and the community wil respond(sometimes good ..sometimes bad).

So to say ANA has helped Nepali community in any way is full of BULLSHIT.

It seems that Mr./Ms. "USNepali" is trying to take some kind of revenge with Mr. Adhikari. Mr. "Danger" is correct. Mr. Adhikari has always been dedicated to Nepali Community in US, since a long time with either leading student community in the universities he studied or the place where he lives.
Its really not acceptable what you have mentioned your "personal" views on someone who is really doing something good for the Nepali Community. Why you guys always active on pulling legs of another Nepali fellow?? What you've done so far good for Nepali cummunity in US? We would be glad to see and read more about "you" if you dare to do that.

BC - How's it going ? I guess I am with you to a certain point. But the ANA is not about assimilation, is it? At least not according to it's purposes and goals (see below). ANA was not founded for that purpose - rather, according to those stated goals, it seems it's objectives are far from assimilation - sometimes contrary to assimilation. Which I think was one of your points earlier and I am with you there. Where I loose you, is why expect the ANA or GBNC or one of the ethnic Samaj's to help their people assimilate - they were not founded for that - au contraire, they were founded to preserve cultures that might get lost because of assimilation even if it means there are some down sides to doing so.

Such organizations clearly seem to believe that mutli-culturalism (as opposed to assimilation) is the way to go. At least thats the sense I get. Which is a legitimate goal in a society like America which, at many levels, encourages multi-culturalism. Therefore they tend to attract people who are like minded.Which may not be you and me (to some extent at least) but there are vast numbers of people here who dont want to or cannot assimilate (because language, educational barriers etc) and I say live and let live - let people have any organization they want and do what they want. Why break our heads over it? :P LOL!!

I'd rather that people join an organization that teaches them entrepreneurship or something but that's just me. To each his own. Who am I to tell them what to do, no? :)

And woops looks like this is becoming a conversation about assimilation versus multi culturalism after all :)

Aftanoon Capn'
Ok their purpose is a lil different than what i had expected. FINE. But if you read their content:-
The only things I witnessed @ ANA was neither educational nor charitable association of Nepalis(rather an exhibition of how much wealth you have so you can go show off to other Nepalis and the same with the so called Intellects flashing their PHD's in your face claiming to know more than you do).

Preservation of Nepali Identity and culture in America(must be kidding .. women showing more skin is preservation of our culture, guys getting into drunken scuffles is preservation of our Nepali culture ?) ?

"and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the participation of Nepali-Americans in the communities they live in."
Yeah the neighbours always have to call the cops for disturbance of peace... jail a few of them here and ther for drunken rowdyness is a good way to bridge our cultures. I mean C'mon now Capn'.

LOL BC. I am actually agreement with your last line of thought. Because of the somewhat contrarian position I ended up taking, it might appear as though I am defending the ANA or other ethnic organizations - but that's not my intent at all. I just think you cant expect them to be a whole lot different for the reasons mentioned. That's all.

An organization is only as good as its members and the reported/alleged behavior, as you mentioned, in some of these events leaves a lot to be desired. Besides bringing disrepute to the organization and hampering its ability to deliver as per its stated goals. On that account, I don't have a whole lot of sympathy with such people and I think the organizers should cough up the extra dough, hire some bouncers, and kick out such miscreants. By not doing so, they only subject themselves to the kind of criticism just leveled. And that's their loss.

Aight, have a good one. Enjoy the outing tonight :)

Can't blame the ANA for all the convention woes as these cats let the host city's organizers do all the planning for the event while they watch from the sidelines offering their ideas a lil here and there. They're (ANA) the perfect franchise. They let the host city organizers wind up all the necessary man-power, do all planning, the dirty jobs required BUT end up partaking a lion's share of the profits and during the convention give all the bhasan-shashan as though they made this all happen.

At the rate of curent developments, I see that the ANA will cease to be a major hub for the Nepali diaspora. Even though, they do financially well with very little input on their side into the convention, they stand at risk to lose the most. The local organizations are the ones organize and prepare the event and are incapable of handling the influx of 4000 people in a venue the size of a meager hotel lobby. Most of these organizations may have done few events where they don't even have a 100 people attend and in my view are, in no way capable of handling an event of such a magnitude. No wonder, with inadequete planning and the profit-motive fueling along, costs are kept low including the dance/concert parties where there are hardly enough bouncers to tame the 1000 strong attendees. Even the hotel bars are areas where no cops or bouncers frequent. What happens if a major fight breaks out? So far, all I've seen at the ANA is skirmishes and am yet to see the real deal. Who knows when this will happen, but I sense that at this rate, its just a matter of time. Once that happens, even though the local organizer have signed a contract taking responsibility for all the actions there (as they ARE the organizers), the ANA will be blamed and have their reputation tarnished. No one cares who the local organizers are, as we in New York hadn't even heard of the Roky Mountain Friends of Nepal (ANA '03) or the Phoenix '04 organizers (forgot their org name already), as we all go there thinking it’s the ANA who hosts such events where the Diaspora meets up annually. Anything doesn’t go right there, its all the ANA fault (proof is on sajha every year. No one says how the Dallas/New York organizers did well or sucked…All the blame or glory goes to the ANA).

Yeah, and about the intellectuals...hahah they really crack me up! Those wannabe smarties who think that just becoz they have a Ph.D or a JD or an MD, the normal folks need to look up to them. I'd crack their skulls if they ever came up to someone I know and made them feel small. They just need to stop wearing those suit and ties in the dead heat of July 4th and dress normally like everyone does in t-shirts/shorts/jeans during the SUMMER and while on VACATION. Also, wannabe netas crack me up big time. I attend the ANAs to have fun, get drunk, meet up with old pals from other states and mainly to participate in the sporting events...I have no time for all the big talks and these friggin goons out to suck us all dry

Samsara has a good point about how difficult it is to manage +3k people who attend the conference. However, it is important to appreciate the efforts that the organizers put into managing everything. It is not like they are getting paid for the countless hours that they put into organizing the event. Anyway, I wonder why there is always a fight in soccer but not in basketball. Both sports are equally physical. Maybe more flopping in football, but still...

You're right sleepy. Evey year there seems to be a major air of tension at the soccer field attributed mainly to too much testosterone and the need to be the alpha male by all the cats on the field. I guess even the attire/accessories makes one feel like gladiators…steel studded boots and shin-guards ala a sword/hammer and a shield. Get some females to watch the game and the cats go crazy! There was an incident in Dallas where there was a fight on the field that flowed over into the hotel lobby later that night. Hahahaha That was a riot!!

BTW, basketball at the ANA is more of a family event and foul play and fights are non-existant. Why? I don't know. Could it be coz more of the students play B'Ball whereas the ones already working or coming straight from Nepal to work here opt for soccer instead?? Who knows??

Lol, I love the gladiator comparison. They do do some vicious $hit in soccer.
Maybe the basketball games are easier to watch by families etc... because it is indoors. I mean, watching the soccer games in the heat is unbearable. Imagine how bad it is for the players. And you know how it goes, all that extra heat really shortens people's tempers. Oh well, lets hope that there are no fights this year. The soccer guys train really hard. They actually have proper practices where they run etc... Its not like basketball where a practice is basically another name for a pick up game. So it would be a waste to lose or get suspended because of some stupid fight.
