Betty and Amy were full-time students in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. Betty's GPA was higher than Amy's in Fall 2008. Betty's GPA was higher than Amy's in Spring 2009. Is it possible that Amy's GPA over the combined Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters was higher than Betty?

No. Average can not be higher if both are lower than threshold.

Depends on number of classes they took over the semesters. After all, it's grade point average.

salloni... u missed the biggest part of the question.... how many credits they took in each semesters?? Full time student = 12 or over for Undergrad and 9 or over for Grad... so they might have taken different credit hours. In that case, it is possible.

Calculation Hint:

if credit hours "3" = 3* 4 = 12 (its like out of or full marks for 3 credit hour class)

A = 12

B = 9

C = 3

F = 0

I think you can calculate on your own now.

No.

lemme show in graphic way

Consider

 Betty's GPA in fall 2008 =A

Amy's Gpa in fall 2008 -=B

Betty's GPA in spring 2009=A'

Amy's GPA in spring 2009=B'

as per your statement A>B and A'>B'

now you can get the conclusion by yourself.

There is no possible way that Amy could have better GPA no matter how many units they both are taking...
Challenge frens if anybody can prove me Amy could have higher GPA at given condition!!!!

GPA itself is an average. Lets say the GPA is ranged from 0-4.
GPA for one semester no matter how many courses you have takend would be single value.

lets say , bettys gpa for two sems are A, B
amys for two sems are x,y

Given condition,

A>x and B>y

you want to prove
(X+y)/2 >(A+B)/2  ==>   X+Y>A+B ==> x (smaller than A) + y(smaller than B)  > A+B

Mathematically, it is not possible.

Both take 10 credits for fall 2008

Bettey GPA 2.0
Total earned points 2.0*10=20

Amy GPA 1.9
Total earned points 1.9*10 =19

Spring 2009

Betty takes 10 credits and get 4.0 but Amy takes 100 credits and gets 3.9

Betty total earned points =4*10=40

Amy total earned points = 3.9*100 = 390

Combined beety gpa (20+40)/(10+10)=3.0

Combines amy gpa (19+390)/(10+100) which is greater than 3.

I hav taken 100 because it is a math problem not a day to day practical problem

Bravo grad. Actually since the total number of credits is not revealed, you could have different credit numbers for Betty and Amy in one semester too (i.e. fall 2008 Betty took 10 credits but Amy took 14 credits). Your's way is the best.

Gorkhali Kanchhalai challenge kasto lagyo?

Good question salonni.

@default061

(X+y)/2 >(A+B)/2

Average GPA is not calculated like that.....
for example you took 12 hours in fall and your GPA was 3.0 and you took 3 hours on spring, and your GPA was 4.0. your average GPA is not (3+4)/2=3.5.
Your average GPA would be 3.2

You can use this as a hint..

dimagkharab, is your answer YES or NO? Sounds like you are saying NO by giving an equation that is not validated.
(A*x+C*m)/x+m > (B*y+D*n)/y+n
IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE.

Grad_school you got it..
But just to make real in the real world here is an example-
The classes are all 3 hours each
Betty (Fall) 18 hours- 6 classes --GPA 2.0 (made all C)
Betty (spring) 12 hours- 4 classes-- GPA 4.0 (all A)
Betty Average GPA for (Fall+ Spring)= 2.8

Amy (Fall) 12 Hours  -4 classes—GPA  1.75 (3 C, 1 D)
Amy (Spring) 15 Hours- 5 classes GPA-3.8 (4 A, 1B)
Amy Average GPA for (fall+spring)=2.889
